St. Landry Parish Schools Recognized for Computer Science Programs as They Recover From Cyber Attack - News15 | Lafayette, LA - FOX 15

David Reed is trying to help break stereotypes.

“When you think of computer science you think of the Bill Gates type person, the nerdy kids with glasses and the computer science world is trying to let everybody else know that it’s ok to be a girl, it’s ok to be a minority,” said Northwest High School teacher David Reed.

Northwest High School along with Opelousas High and the Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts are winners of College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award.

Administrators say the districts math and science initiative has helped support the computer science programs.

“We are very proud of all of our schools that we are able to participate in the National Math and Science Initiative, which is commonly known as NMSI. We’re the only district in the State of Louisiana that have all of their high schools to participate in the NMSI program,” said St. Landry Parish School Superintendent Patrick Jenkins.

The district aims to help maintain growth in math and science programs by starting early.

“We’ve started in the elementary schools, we have programs like Girls Who Code in elementary programs, we have robotics programs we even have drones in our career and technical programs,” said Jenkins.

The awards come just as the district is recovering from recent cyber attacks.

“We haven’t been able to use our computers for the past two weeks due to the cyber attacks so students were kind of working offline, we did the AP practice test where we had to print it out on paper,” said Reed.

The district’s IT department, along with several state agencies helped the district log on and get back to work.

“We’re definitely proud of them, those guys and girls have been putting in long hours,” said Jenkins. “They haven’t been off in 14 days, working overtime away from their families, so we want to thank them.”

The school district has also launched a new website. You can get to the new webpage by going to www.slpsb.org.
