Six area school districts receive state computer grants - Bucks County Courier Times

The $35,000 awards will go toward expanding computer science classes and teacher training.

Six school districts in Bucks and Eastern Montgomery counties were recently awarded PAsmart targeted state grants that will be used to expand computer science classes and teacher training.

The Abington, Bristol Borough, Centennial, Lower Moreland, New Hope-Solebury and Pennsbury districts were awarded $35,000 each to augment science, technology, engineering and mathematics related offerings.

A total of 136 school districts, 15 charter and cyber charter schools, seven intermediate units and five career and technical centers across the state received $5.7 million in grants.

“This grant will provide the opportunity for students to continue to develop age appropriate STEM skills in middle school before they have the opportunity to take courses such as robotics and coding, engineering and product design at Pennsbury High School,” said Jessica Perfetto, the district’s applied engineering & technology education curriculum coordinator.

New Hope-Solebury Superintendent Charles Lentz said the grant will be used to expand STEM initiatives throughout the district.

“We are planning to increase our faculty training in the area of computer science which can enhance our student learning in STEM areas,” he said. “This grant will allow us to continue to enhance our comprehensive computer science programs at the elementary and middle school level and expand computer science for our students in grades 7-12.

“We are also planning to increase our opportunities for students to engage in robotics at the secondary level.”

State Sen. Steve Santarsiero, D-10, Lower Makefield, said funds committed to STEM is money well spent. His legislative district includes Pennsbury and New Hope-Solebury.

“It is estimated that over the next decade, more than 70% of new jobs in Pennsylvania will be in STEM-related fields,” he said. “I’m proud of the work our school districts are doing to prepare students for the future job market.”
