State football games: Computer projects Metro teams will have a great weekend - San Francisco Chronicle

The high school football season starts earlier and earlier each season — this year it was the middle of August. But it still ends in the the second week of December.

The long season comes to an end Friday and Saturday with 14 state championship games — a record nine of which involve Bay Area teams.

For the past 20 years, CalPreps.com has used a computer to project game outcomes. If the group’s projections are correct, Northern California teams will win 11 games — and six of the victories will come from Metro teams.

Below is the schedule of Bay Area teams and projected scores. The top five divisions can be seen on either NBC Sports Bay Area (Saturday) or NBC Sports California (Friday). All games are also scheduled to be streamed on the NFHS Network.

Open Division

De La Salle-Concord (12-1) vs. St. John Bosco-Bellflower (12-1) at Cerritos College, 8 p.m. Saturday: The Spartans have been to every final since the state re-established championships in 2006. Their record in those games is 7-6, but they have lost three in a row. De La Salle would love a little redemption against the Braves, who beat them in 2013 and ‘16 finals. Projected score: St. John Bosco 42-24.

Division 1-A

Serra (13-1) vs. Corona del Mar-Newport Beach (15-0) at Cerritos College, 4 p.m. Saturday: The Padres have split two earlier state-title appearances but will need a monumental defensive effort to knock out CDM and QB Ethan Garbers who has accounted for 5,210 yards and 78 touchdowns. Projected score: Corona del Mar 31-21

Division 2-AA

Clayton Valley-Concord (9-5) vs. Aquinas-San Bernardino (13-2) at Cerritos College, 4 p.m. Friday: A season of rebuild and injuries, was reborn late and now the Eagles are looking for an unlikely first state title after losing two previously. Projected score: Clayton Valley 22-19.

Division 2-A

McClymonds-Oakland (11-0) vs. Pacifica-Oxnard (14-1) at Cerritos College, noon Saturday: McClymonds is trying to become the first public school to win four straight state titles (tying it with De La Salle and Central Catholic-Modesto). The CIF moved the Warriors up two divisions, but with a 529-63 point differential, it’s hard to bet against them. Pacifica is clearly the best team McClymonds has faced. Projected score: Pacifica 34-31.

Division 3-AA

El Camino-Oceanside (9-6) at Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa (13-1), 6 p.m. Saturday: A year after ending their wildfire-interrupted season with a coin flip, the Cardinals aim for a first state title in their third try. With three-year starting QB Jackson Pavitt and superb defense, they’re in good shape Projected score: Cardinal Newman 28-22.

Division 3-A

Bakersfield Christian (11-3) at Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park (11-3), 6 p.m. Saturday: If Newman and Cotate both win, one league — the North Bay (Oak Division) — would have two state champions. Third-year coach Gehrig Hotaling is 32-7. Projected score: Cotate 22-21.

Division 5-A

Reseda (11-3) at Milpitas (8-6), 6 p.m. Saturday: The Trojans started 2-5 but caught fire, winning six of seven, making the most of the competitive equity model, while riding the workhorse legs of 5-8, 160-pound Josue Torres (79 carries last two games). Projected score: Milpitas 22-21.

Division 6-A

Bishop Union-Bishop (12-2) at Salesian-Richmond (11-3), noon Saturday: This is perhaps finest coaching job in Chad Nightingale’s 24-year career, taking a team with just 23 players to the state title game. And the Pride got stronger down stretch. Projected score: Salesian 28-12.

Division 7-AA

Gardena (11-4) vs. Lincoln (11-1) at City College of San Francisco, noon Saturday: With all the talent that graduated from last season’s 13-0 state 6-A title team, few saw Lincoln returning to this point. But workhorse RB Luis Contreras (299 carries, 2,323 yards, 27 TDs) has led the way. Projected score: Lincoln 21-20.
