Rochester, Minn. (KTTC) -- An annual 12-week event kicked off at Lourdes high school on Sunday. Technovation is a program that not only helps bring about awareness of trying to recruit more women into the computer science field, but also to help bring about what the needs of the Rochester Community are.
Girls had the three opportunities to sit down with local organizations and interview them for 15 minutes in hopes to give them and their team a better idea of which to help. The help they'd do would come from the objective of the program, to develop an app for their cause. Over the course of the 12 weeks, teams will have to brainstorm, develop, create, and then pitch the app in front of a judge panel in May.
Global Student Ambassador and a student representative on the SouthEastern Minnesota Board for Technovation Anjali Donthi says, "the things you learn from it are amazing and have really helped turn me into the person that I am today." She invites all girls to come out and join, even if they aren't into computer science, the plethora of other skills learned are valuable as well.
Organizations the girls had the chance to speak with today were Brighter Tomorrows, Catholic Charities, Cradle to Career, Diversity Council, Girl Scouts of MN & WI River Valleys, Intercultural Mutual Assistance Association (IMAA), Live Give Save, Rochester Public Library, Ronald McDonald House, Sierra Club, United Way, and Women Leadership/Entrepreneurship.
Teams will present their apps in May.
