LEYDEN — Computer systems in the town’s offices will see welcome updates, thanks to a $40,000 grant award that was announced last week.

Municipal Assistant Michelle Giarusso applied for the Community Compact Information Technology Grant through the state in the fall. Leyden will use the money to purchase new computers altogether, or update current systems to Windows 10.

“This is welcome news for the town of Leyden,” said Selectboard Chair Jeffrey Neipp said. “Our (municipal assistant) put this grant together knowing the town was in need of updating all our computers to Windows 10. ... It couldn’t have been awarded at a better time, with the town moving all its offices into the old school building with outdated computers.”

In a letter shared by Neipp, addressed to him from the Executive Office for Administration and Finance, Secretary Michael J. Heffernan said Leyden’s application was chosen to receive grant funding “because it met the overarching goal of driving innovation and transformation at the local level via investments in technology.”

The Selectboard will determine what other projects may be permitted within the guidelines of the grant, but updating computer systems was the objective when Giarusso submitted the application. The Selectboard must file final documentation with the state by Feb. 14 to receive the funding.
