Brainerd Public Library offers computer classes for beginners - Brainerd Dispatch

The Brainerd Public Library is offering free classes to area residents who are new to computers, haven’t used them for a while, are a little unsure and uncomfortable, or need a refresher.

All of the classes are taught using computers equipped with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2013, unless otherwise noted. Class size is limited to 10 students and those interested can register by calling 218-829-5574.

Computer Basics part 1 will be 2:30-4:30 p.m. Jan. 9. Students will learn how to get started on a computer, even if they have never used one before. They will be taught how to use a mouse and how to begin to search the internet safely. No prior computer experience is needed for this class.

An introduction to Microsoft Excel will be taught 9:30-11:30 a.m. Jan. 13. Students will learn how to create a simple, useful spreadsheet, including entering basic formulas and formatting the document for printing. Ability to use a mouse and keyboard required.

A class introducing Windows 10 will be 1-3 p.m. Jan. 28. Students will see the changes from earlier versions to the new Windows 10, including new menus, settings, login options and more. Attendees must have the ability to use a mouse and keyboard and be familiar with a previous version of Windows.

Computer Basics part 2 will be taught 2:30-4:30 p.m. Feb. 6. Students who have attended Computer Basics, or who feel comfortable with using a computer mouse to click and scroll, will learn about kinds of computers and devices, as well as basic file types and how to identify them. Students will also be introduced to some of the most popular websites, including Facebook, eBay, Pinterest, YouTube and more.

An introduction to the Apple iPad will be taught 9:30-11:30 a.m. Feb. 10. Students will have hands-on practice with the basics, like navigating settings and finding and using apps. No previous experience is necessary and iPads are provided for each student to use.

Part 2 of the Introduction to Windows 10 class will be 1-3 p.m. Feb. 25 and will cover new features, including the Microsoft Edge browser and OneDrive cloud storage service. Attendees must have the ability to use a mouse and keyboard and have some familiarity with previous versions of Windows. Attending Windows 10 part 1 prior to taking this class is recommended but not required.

Classes are taught by Laurel Hall, public services library assistant at the Brainerd Public Library. Hall has been helping library patrons with computer and technology questions since 2009, and teaching classes for four years. The technology used in these classes was made possible by grants from the Otto Bremer Trust.
